The Otter Tail Chapter of Wild Ones is based in Fergus Falls (Otter Tail County), Minnesota. Chartered in 1998 (?), this chapter focuses on learning and sharing knowledge about native plants and natural landscaping, with a strong emphasis on community service. A few of our on-going projects include:
* Godel Park Prairie. In 19xx, we collaborated with the City of Fergus Falls to convert 8 acres of city park land from mowed lawn to restored prairie. This property is adjacent to Hoot Lake on the NE side of town. The prairie has been burned three times, in partnership with the City Fire Department, and Wild Ones members congregate every spring to cut thistles and any other non-natives.
* RiverWalk Planting. We adopted a stretch of the City of Fergus Falls' RiverWalk and have worked to remove non-natives and plant natives. This challenging site is on the banks of the Otter Tail River through downtown Fergus Falls. The bank is steep and unrestricted foot traffic has led to considerable erosion. Wild Ones members meet at the site once or twice a year for planting and maintenance.
* Grotto Park Rain Garden. We are currently constructing a rain garden in Grotto Park, Fergus Falls. This is a cooperative project with the City, SWCD, Prairie Restoration, and U of M Extension. The rain garden is 2500sqft, capturing rainwater runoff from the Salvation Army building and parking lot and allowing it to infiltrate rather than running into a storm drain that outlets into the Otter Tail River. This project will be completed in 2009.
