Woodland Carex
of the Upper Midwest

By Linda Curtis. Curtis Third Productions

Woodland CarexThis new book on Carex, those grass-like plants with triangular stems, is rich with over 200 macro-photos, plus illustrations of this difficult-to-identify genus.

This mysterious group of plants that look like grasses but are not, and have triangular rather than round stems, are the entire topic of this book. Covering only the Carex species found in the woodlands of the Upper Midwest, this book will be enjoyed by botanist, naturalists, and (because of the many photos and illustrations) just about anyone interested in plants.

Through the eye of her camera, Linda Curtis shows us the diverse textures and designs these plants lend to the woody landscape.

By Douglas W. Tallamy
SORRY – SOLD OUT

Birdscaping in the Midwest

Birdscaping in the Midwest:
A Guide to Gardening with Native Plants to Attract Birds
By Mariette Nowak

Most of the examples of planting in this book are from yards of Wild Ones members, so it would be fair to say that this is a book about landscaping ideas encouraged by Wild Ones. I would go a step further and call this a very well-illustrated "textbook" for Wild Ones in the Midwest. Maryann Whitman, Wild Ones Journal editor.

In this remarkable book, author Mariette Nowak takes the reader step by step along the path toward habitat restoration. While the focus is on bird habitat, all the other associated animals and plants will benefit equally from these restorations. Indeed, birds are considered barometers of the health of an ecosystem, and as birds increase or decrease, so also do all other species within that ecosystem.

This wonderfully readable and richly detailed book will serve as an indispensable reference for Midwestern gardeners wishing to leave such a legacy. Unlike books that are national in scope, this one presents valuable information specific to the Midwest and its native flora and fauna. Every region of our country needs its own guide of this kind.

The book is signed by the author, Mariette Nowak, the retired director of Milwaukee Countys Wehr Nature Center, in East Troy, Wisconsin. She now serves on the boards of the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology and the Land Trust of Walworth County and was Vice President of Wild Ones and Editor-in-Chief of the Wild Ones Journal.

America's Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie

America's Lost Landscape"America's Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie" tells the rich and complex story of one of the most astonishing alterations of nature in human history. Prior to Euro-American settlement in the 1820s, one of the major landscape features of North America was 240 million acres of tallgrass prairie. But between 1830 and 1900 in the space of a single lifetime the tallgrass prairie was steadily transformed into farmland. This drastic change in the landscape also brought about an enormous social change of native Americans; in an equally short time their cultural imprint was reduced in essence to a handful of place-names appearing on maps. The extraordinary cinematography of prairie remnants, original score, and archival images are all delicately interwoven to create a powerful and moving viewing experience about the natural and cultural history of America.

SORRY – CD-ROM IS SOLD OUT

Wild About Wild Flowers CD-ROM or Video
SORRY – CD-ROM IS SOLD OUT
VIDEO STILL AVAILABLE

Everyone agrees: native American wildflowers and prairie grasses are lovely to look at and fun to identify. But how do you grow them? Removing the mystery.

SORRY – CD-ROM IS SOLD OUT: If we get more, we'll let you know. This is a set of new productions from Outdoor Images. Wild About Wildflowers is now available in both VHS videotape and interactive CD-ROM (CD-ROM SOLD OUT), complete with Internet links to dozens of websites.

The new instructional offerings mix beautiful footage and modern graphics with professional narration and inspiring music. The result is a showcase of Midwestern seasonal blooms, their identities and habitats. Wildflowers are the stars, but there's much more than pretty images. Landowners learn how to get dirt on their hands -- the real key to growing success in both small plots (next to the backyard patio, along the front sidewalk) and large parcels (whole-lawn conversions, restored native prairies).

"Choosing the right kinds of native plants for your property's soil type is critical," says producer Tom Huggler, a landowner and conservationist who replaced most of his sprawling lawn in southern Michigan with native blooms and grasses. "You can't just toss seed on the ground and expect wildflowers to grow. You have to find a good seed source, prepare the site properly, and plant at the right time in the right way."

Besides beauty, there are many incentives to establishing wildflowers and grasses. Native plants attract bees, butterflies and other insects, as well as hummingbirds, rabbits and many other kinds of wildlife. Manicured lawns, on the other hand, produce a sterile environment to most wildlife. Maintaining lawns costs money, is labor intensive, bums fossil fuels that are not renewable, and contributes to air and noise pollution.

Going native is also a good way to check erosion and to enhance property values. And mixing in bluestem, indian grass, switch grass and other native grasses creates a lovely winter garden at home, around businesses ,and in neighborhood parks and schools. -->

Previous Tom Huggler tapes have won prestigious Teddy Awards and North American Outdoor Film/Video Awards.

    A Tapestry of Learning CD

  • A Tapestry of Learning: Creating School Natural Areas

Wild Ones has produced a film to introduce the idea of creating an outdoor school natural area using native plant species. The intended audience would be teachers, parent-teacher organizations, neighbors, community groups and possible school natural area funding sources. Featuring Lorrie Otto prominently throughout, the film captures in just 7 minutes the essence of an outdoor learning center. Produced by David Savinski, the narration and sound track was provided gratis by Emmy award winning film producer, Mike Syverson, who is a Wild Ones member thru marriage.

Now produced in CD format, the film is partnered with interative activities which can be used by young and old who have an interest in creating and using outdoor nature areas and learning centers.

This CD is a wonderful resource and would make a great gift to your local school. It could be used as a memorial gift or just simply as a nudge to get them off in the right direction.

    Prairie Card Set 1

Prairie Note Cards - Set 1

For the past ten years, photographer Larry Godson and artist, Lana Gits, have combined their talents to create "The Prairie Portraits" - a series of detailed black and white photo-images of individual prairie plants. In order to call attention to the inherent diversity found in a true prairie, subjects were restricted to one, single locale - Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve in Westchester, Illinois. Here, over 400 different species exist on only 85 acres. Several of these plants, however, are found growing in other bio regions across the United States.

Set One (Eastern and Central United States).
    8 Cards and Envelopes

Specially designed for the Wild Ones, Set One includes one each of eight different plants which can be found growing in the upper half of the eastern United States as well as the central U.S.: Early Wild Rose, Thimbleweed, Yellow Star Grass, White Lady's Slipper, Wild Geranium, Indian Paintbrush, Rue Anemone, and Solomon's Seal. 5-1/2 x 4 inch cards are printed with full plant description on reverse, 100% recycled stock with "cypress green" envelopes, and are packaged in resealable plastic. An interview with the late taxonomist, Floyd Swink, entitled "Prairie is My Field," is also enclosed in each set.

$11 per set, includes shipping and handling.
